About David Stine Woodworking

Every piece of furniture David Stine creates is one-of-a-kind. No two are alike.

David personally selects, harvests and mills all of the lumber he uses in his work. The wood is native to the southern region of Illinois where David’s shop and farm are located, and most of the lumber is harvested from family forests that David stewards himself to ensure proper sustainability and management. David culls only dead and dying trees, allowing new growth to flourish. He also works with local arborists to ensure that their lumber is properly utilized.

Design inspiration comes from the inner beauty of the wood itself, through the process of harvesting and sawing. As the boards are milled, David often sees what he will build, and every design maximizes the raw, natural and singular beauty of the wood.

Each piece is hand crafted using traditional methods of joinery and construction, with details clients can see and feel. Only environmentally safe finishes are used. David builds limited series of pieces from individual trees. Clients may also commission custom furniture, and often travel to David’s farm and woodshop in Dow, Illinois to choose their boards and meet privately with David.

David Stine’s work has been featured in Forbes Life, The Chicago Tribune, Hamptons Television, designspace, Architectural DC, Mary Engelbreit’s Home Companion and St. Louis Magazine, where he was named one of St. Louis’ top 10 “green” entrepreneurs. His clients include actor and activist Michael J. Fox, architect Hugh Newell Jacobsen, political writer Andrew Sullivan, actor and director Chris Eigeman and Gordon and Carole Segal, the owners of Crate & Barrel.

David is a founding member of the Sustainable Furniture Council and a member of the Furniture Society, the St. Louis Craft Alliance and the American Craft Council.
